(And no, there are no mermaids living there.) Public access is not allowed without a permit from the Mexican government. It is the ancestral territory of members of the Seri Indian tribe, but today is an uninhabited wildlife preserve. Mermaid Diane Webber helps George Rowe when a pearl expedition is beset by dirty work. “Just then the question came to me, how feminine was this creature… this mermaid, if that’s what she was?”ġ) After this film bombed in its initial release, Lamb edited in some new nudie footage of women cavorting topless underwater and released it under the title “The Aqua Sex.”Ģ) The real island of Tiburon is located in the Gulf of California, not far from Hermosillo, Sonora. But at least watching a bevy of frolicking mermaids is certainly a lot more interesting than just another guy in a bad rubber suit. The plot is slow and plodding, only to wind up taking you exactly where you suspected it would. In the ocean around the island of Tiburon, off the coast of Mexico, studly marine biologist Samuel Jamison (George Rowe), following rumors of an uncatalogued new species, clashes with boozy pearl hunter/thief Milo Sangster (Timothy Carey) and his buffoonish lackey Pepe (Jose Gonzales-Gonzales, poor guy), only to discover a colony of mermaids, featuring the slinky former Playboy centerfold Diane Webber. The use of actual Mexican locations is a nice change of pace from the usual cheap settings in the suburbs of Los Angeles, and writer/director John Lamb should get some points thinking up a story that’s a little different than the usual alien invasion fodder. One MERMAIDS OF TIBURON review remarked that, as she plays a mermaid, Diane’s surname Webber must have been an in-joke in fact, though, it is her married name. As the vessel leaves the island, the mermaid surfaces, sadly watches it depart, and then disappears from sight.“The Mermaids of Tiburon” is just more forgettable drive-in filler from the early 1960s. The mermaid, realizing that she could never leave her world beneath the sea, hides from view until he reboards his ship and pulls anchor. Jamison tries to find the mermaid queen to persuade her to return to civilization with him. Sangster also locates the cave, but mermaids put him under their spell and lure him to his death. Once at the desolate island, Jamison encounters a mermaid queen who leads him to an underwater cave filled with fire pearls. When Steinhauer disappears, Jamison makes the trip alone, unaware that Milo Sangster, a fellow passenger on the chartered boat, is a ruthless adventurer who has murdered Steinhauer in the hope of getting the fire pearls for himself. Doesnt hold water, but pretty underwater scenes filmed in Mexico and. His partner, Ernst Steinhauer, is a pearl trader who claims there is a rich supply of fire pearls to be found at Tiburon. Mermaid Diane Webber helps George Rowe when a pearl expedition is beset by dirty work.
